Hang On In There!

Hang On In There! On Saturday, when I took on my 5th of 7 marathons for 2011, I grew as a person. I wanted to share what I learned with those who have supported me along this path. First, I know why training is important. Since this was my 5th marathon I thought eventhough I had not been running on a regular I could get it done-Even at the expense of my body. Training allows us to show up prepared and ready, not just "present to endure".

It was the hardest marathon yet. My trainer had taught me to lay out my clothes before a run. This time I did not and just pulled them out of my overnite bag the morning of my run only to discover I had not packed the "right" socks. Socks are as crucial to one's run as training itself. Without time to correct it I rolled with what I had.

I arrived at Stennis Space Station in Mississippi @ 5:30am from New ORleans. At 8:30 the race started and off we were. By the 13 mile marker I could feel my lack of training as my legs began to crap intensely. By the time I made it to the 15 mile marker the wrong socks had taken their toll. By the time I made it to the 18 mile marker the storm came and it rained and rained and rained.By the time I made it to the 20 mile marker I could not run but had to walk on the side of my feet. At 22, I sat in the rain in the middle of the road with no one no where to be found.I felt as if I could not go on. I probably shedded a tear but the way it was pouring down not even I could tell being soaking wet from the rain. Thats when some one who had completed the race stopped by and gave me two tylenol and a encouraging word. both of which were well received.

I managed to pull myself together and keep on going. I had to pause...but I refused to stop! When I made it to the 24 mile marker the rain eased and the SUN came out and I was reminded. HANG ON IN THERE it is darkest right before light. in my mind I began to hum the gospel song " I'm so glad trouble don't last always"..all we have to do is keep on keepin' on brighter days are just ahead.

And there it was mile 25..and the water guy was still there! He told me the best news I had heard! He said, "hey, if you hurry up you can beat the guy just ahead of you and you won't be last!" Yea, with everything I had and did not have I hopped along with one thing in mind beat the older gentleman in front of me whose injury must have been worst than mine. And I did!

When I made it to the finish line the only people left at the race where this man behind me's family who cheered me on until the end. The race management group had stopped on there way out and gave me and the guy our medals just before the 26 mile marker because they had packed up and were on there way out. :) LOL

I said all that to say 12 blisters later.. I did it! And so can you! No matter how hard these times we are living in seem. Everyday we wake and we create miracles-cause we take a little something and make it into everything we need it to be and try to make it look easy.

Be encouraged family and encourage someone else to know that "the sun always comes out tomorrow, all we got to do is hang on in there!!

Fox Rich:The Institution of Family

First Marathon

To say that I am getting very excited about running our first of seven marathons to send @ Risk Kids to college is an understatement. I am still amazed at seeing how committed I have been to training for this cause. I had been trying for years to be dedicated to an active lifestyle but always slacking!

To me it shows how when we humble ourselves to work for others we create what we need for ourselves. I know that what we are doing is so necessary and I am grateful for the people that not only believe in our  work but are getting up off their buts and working to assist us in creating CHANGE!

Graduation

I have been interested in blogging for a while now. This is my first experience and I am testing it out. It is a wonderful gift to share your thoughts and concepts with others. I am hopeful that this is a tool I can use to get the word out about mass incarceration and its affects on our communities.
